I'm in the process of figuring out who I am - mother, wife, daughter, writer, extrovert, hermit. A contradiction in every sense of the word. Maybe it's a cliche or just mid-life, after all it's the journey, not the destination.
I couldn't wait to dive into this book and as I posted a few days ago, I already loved the book because of the cover and I wasn't disappointed. I read this one slowly, or at least slowly for me. I didn't want it to end as much as I wanted to see how the author would bring all the pieces together. It has complex and rich descriptions of the circus and its performers.
"On this evening, Mme. Padva wears a dress of black silk, hand embroidered with intricate patterns of cherry blossoms, something like a kimono reincarnated as a gown. Her silver hair is piled atop her head and held in place with a small jewel black cage. A choker of perfectly cut scarlet rubies circles her neck, putting forth a vague impression of her throat having been slit. The overall effect is slightly morbid and incredibly elegant."
I wanted to enter into the pages and live there. The plot itself is complicated and the time shifts back and forth and can be somewhat confusing, I was very glad I had actually bought the hardcover and wasn't trying to keep track of things on my Kobo. There is mystery, magic and some romance - a Harry Potter for grown ups. There, of course, is already talk of a movie. The producers of the Twilight series have bought the rights and while I think it would be wonderful on the screen, I hope they don't turn it into another teen fantasy flick.
